Yaba TV Telethon - Bridging the Cultural Divide
On August 8, 2010, IFERS volunteers participated in the Yaba TV Live Telethon at KCET to raise funds towards bridging the cultural divide and helping orphans and widows in Africa. The live telethon was hosted by Sia-Sia Yiaba whose Yaba TV show has featured prominent guests including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and former Presidents of Ghana and Sierra Leone. IFERS is proud to help promote Sia-Sia's humanitarian and educational efforts.
UNICEF Theme Song "Get It Together" by Pau Gasol and BROSHIGEEZ
In June 2010, Pau Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers) and BROSHIGEEZ (originally formed by apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas) have recorded a new theme song "Get It Together" for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). Pau Gasol has joined the initiative "Schools for Africans" carried out by UNICEF and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to support the construction of schools in Ethiopia. Managed by Michael Herrera (Haus of "M"), BROSHIGEEZ group members Thomas Van Musser, Royal Cooks, and Kimala have written hit songs for the Black Eyed Peas and other celebrity singers. IFERS is proud to help promote their humanitarian and educational efforts.
The Art Institute of Cameroon
Since March 2007, IFERS has been helping to create an institute for art students in Douala and other cities in Cameroon. The art institute will be overseen by Sabastiene Berenyny, an award-winning African artist who is internationally known as "Sabastiene" for his work in the mediums of painting and sculpture. The art institute in Cameroon will help bring stability and support to the aspiring artists of the future. IFERS is also co-producing Cameroon motion pictures to promote artistic talent in Africa.
Educational Publications
IFERS founder Newton Lee is also the founder and co-editor-in-chief of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computers in Entertainment website and magazine - a nonprofit educational publication to promote research and development in all aspects of entertainment technology. The magazine has garnered the support of more than 100 leading professionals and scholars representing major universities, Hollywood studios, and Fortune 500 companies. Many of whom have won the Academy Awards, Emmys, and Grammys.
The October 2003 and January 2004 issues of Computers in Entertainment were dedicated to the theme "Educating Children Through Entertainment." It published many research papers and video interviews with Roy E. Disney, Quincy Jones, Alan Kay, George Lucas, and Seymour Papert. Newton Lee has published two novels, a book chapter, and many research papers and magazine articles. Some of his publications are listed online at the DBLP Bibliography Server.
